The formative assessment I will be using for my Expressionistic Landscape Painting lesson is a writing assignment! The objective is that students will take one minute to reflect on the lesson from the day and what they learned using some template questions I'll write up on the board in class. This will be done at the end of class after my introduction to the lesson and after I teach the class a bit about Expressionism. Here is an example of what I will write on the board as a prompt:
It was important for Expressionists to depict how the world felt rather than how it looked. How can expressionistic paintings, though more distorted and unrealistic, actually be more authentic than realism paintings?
Students will then have one minute to jot down their thoughts and responses and we can come together for a short discussion at the very end! This will help students have a better understanding before we actually dive into the project.
