Project 1: Cylinders and Project 2: Stacking
Before this class, I had little to no experience with ceramics and throwing on the wheel. A lot of kids were in the same boat, therefore the goal of our first project was to get more comfortable with throwing and create 6 cylinders (we should have created many, but 6 to turn in) each 6-7 inches tall. We strived to have flat bases, even walls and level lips on all 6 we were turning in. Once I had 6 cylinders that most closely met the requirement, I attached handles to each of them, which was project 2. The second part of project 2 was to use some of your leftover cylinders that didn't meet the requirement and stack them together to create a dynamic sculpture that was at least 12 inches tall. To the right are some pictures of my finished cylinders with handles, and my stacked sculpture. Unfortunately I did not get any beginning in progress pictures, but you get the idea!

Stacked Cylinders

Below are some pictures of my cylinders after they were bisque-fired in the kiln. The stacked cylinders are currently still in the kiln.

Reflection
What did I accomplish?
I really struggled with throwing in general at first, so coming on with 6 successful cylinders was an accomplishment in itself. However, I think I improved the most in the height of my cylinders.
What were the objectives for the project?
We were supposed to be able to successfully create 6 inch or taller cylinders with even walls, level lips, and flat bases, as well as know how to score and slip properly to attach things.
What do I need to work on?
Although I came a long way with height, it is still something I need to work on. I need to be able to pull more material so the walls aren't so thick and heavy. I also need to work on centering so that my walls are even thickness, and level lips. But I am getting closer! Hopefully I will see some improvement in our next project: Jars with Lids.
